THE FLOODY AND STORMY KAMPALA DAYS

Everything gets a setback in Kampala whenever there is a down pour as different roads get flooded with water, some residential areas become filled with the brown muddy water hence sterilizing the day to day lifestyles of some of the Kampala residents. The problem of floods in Kampala is likely to even increase if Kampala and it's residents don't believe in the reality of what the environment can cause. The environment can be a great friend if respected but however when disrespected, it's wrath is costly. The persistent existence of floods in Kampala during rainy seasons shall lead to the outbreak of other problems for example contaminated water that shall have a threat on the health of Kampala residents.
The upgrading of drainage channels, creation of garbage collecting companies, sensitization of residents and creation of laws aiming at solving the problem of floods in Kampala all seem to be with no impact or positive outcomes. Then what could be the problem and how best can the uncalled for repetitive problem be solved? The reality is that most Kampala residents have failed to understand the true cause of the floods and the biggest causes are man mad and these include; encroachers’ developments such as buildings and cultivation in the drainage or wetland areas and the aggressive poor disposal of waste. When you take moves around Kampala you will find so many drainage channels chocked with plastic bottles, polythene bags, food remains etc.
This projects our minds towards to the thinking of that the companies put
in place to collect the garbage are not effectively doing it right and
therefore, the hundreds tons of garbage from the residents end up in the
drainage channels which play a vital
role during heavy rains however to my understanding, there is little or no one that
has understood the concept of proper
disposal of waste in Kampala despite the sensitization carried out by KCCA as a
body responsible for Kampala affairs. On the other hand the services provided
by the garbage collecting companies are not enough.
There is
no one that should blame the Uganda or KCCA for not coming up with good laws that
could be used to mitigate the problem
for there are enough goods that have ultimately aimed at protecting the
environment but however the problem of poor implementation. The existing law
seem not also have any impact on the big fish of the country who construct in
the water catchment areas. The water catchment areas play an important role in
absorbing much of the waters during rainy days. Most these areas have been
turned into apartments, factories, plazas, arcades. The water will never forget
it's passage but with a well designed plan in Kampala, the goal of solving
floods can be achieved. Sensitization of residents about environment protection
and preservation should be given a high first priority and extensive proper
disposal of waste should be emphasized at all times.
We
wouldn't face the negative impacts of floods if some measures were properly fixed
in the minds of Kampala residents because on the face of it, no one seems to
have ever tried to know why the floods occur and what could be the solutions
that would solve the problem at hand. The environment provides many of the
basic needs of man but the too much aggressive greediness of man is slowly pressing
the world to the wall. The outcomes will greatly affect man himself hence
looking like a fish being boiled by water. With combined efforts, we can save
our environment.
