THE LUNGS OF THE WORLD T rees are just amazing, aren't they? From the really tall ones you see in pictures to the big forests that stretch for miles, they're always there, quietly working to keep our planet healthy. They're so important, in fact, that people often say trees are like the lungs of the world. And it's a really good way to think about it! Think about how your own lungs work: you breathe in air, use what you need, and breathe out what you don't. Trees do something similar, but in reverse, and it's absolutely vital for us. They breathe in the carbon dioxide that we and our cars and factories put into the air, and then they breathe out the oxygen that every living thing needs to survive. This whole process is called photosynthesis, and it's how trees make their food. It's a perfect swap that has kept life going on Earth for a very, very long time.
